\b0 Throughout its history, the port of Honfleur has sent its sailing ships to distant la
nds. In particular, to North America and Canada, and it was from here that Samuel de Champlain set out to found Quebec. The loss of the French colonies in America and competition from Cherbourg and Le Havre dealt a fatal blow to the port in the nineteent
h century. But Honfleur has preserved a charm all of its own with its fishing harbor, old houses, and church of Sainte-Catherine built entirely out of wood. Like the impressionists of the last century, painters still come here today to capture the light
that glides gently over the slate roofs before plunging into the sea.\par
